Learn to draw & paint

This 10-week course will give you a thorough grounding in drawing and painting. It is aimed at complete beginners but can also be taken as a refresher course if you're very rusty. 

Starting with dots on a page, we will explore the elements that make up a work of art: line, tone, texture, colour and shape. We will draw and paint from observation and visual aids, learning to depict natural forms, portraits, landscapes, flowers, seascapes and street scenes. You will also learn how to create abstract compositions and let your imagination run wild! 

For each new medium (e.g. watercolour), I will give an introduction, including equipment needed and relevant artists, and we always practise mark-making techniques and colour-mixing before attempting any proper pieces. I encourage my students to see art-making as one big experiment, focussing on enjoyment of the process rather than hankering after a 'perfect' finished piece! That said, I will also offer you very specific feedback and one-to-one support so you can progress as quickly as possible. After the course you will have the option to continue on to 'Improvers drawing' and/or 'Improvers painting' to take your skills to the next level. 

Subject matter: still life (natural & manmade), portraits, animals/birds, landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes, abstract compositions

Mediums: pencil, fine-liner, pastel, charcoal, colouring pencil, watercolour, inks & acrylic paints
